OPEN CALL

Okay, so we finally have come up for air in our penultimate semesters (respectively) of graduate school. AND WE REMEMBERED HOW MUCH WE LOVE kittyBOOGER!

kB is putting out an open call for submissions! We want your words: essay, fiction, poetry; an excerpt: from a play, or longer work; reviews; book/music/art/life suggestions; rants; recipes; dance or music scores; photos; a wish or memory; drawings; representations of work: paintings, dance, performance, audio recordings... send us something, we'd love to see if it would fit into our fast and loose kittyBOOGER 2013 online-only release (by (the end of) December 2013)... please have any submissions to us by November 30th, 2013 11:59pm.

Two of kB's favorite people are moving to Scotland this fall. kB likes them so much that we helped them pack up their things. They have a lot of things. But, among all of the things for boxes (not dump-runs) were artifacts of Tom & Steph's first sonic collaborations with fun handmade liner-note-art-books.

2012 contributor: Stephanie Lavon Trotter

Stephanie Lavon Trotter tells people she's an opera singer because that's her training, but the dead arias of old dead white men are the last thing leaving her lips these days. On a bear being ridden by a ghost, an e.p., and her contribution to kB2012, she builds open compositions from formal constraints, field recordings, and, more than anything, that finally wild and unleashed instrument--the voice--she's kept hidden under her head all these years. What's more, Stephanie did all the layout for the kittyBOOGER mag. She's the one who so lovingly numbered all the stickers. She's the best.

When she isn't recording sounds, she's reading and writing for her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College, and baking gluten free confections.

2012 contributor: Ted Powers

 Ted Powers' poems are straight-forward and witty. He creates these palpable scenes, and overwhelming emotions - you feel like you are watching an entire fiction unfold in a few lines. He is a great word-smith, and it seems that he is just sitting there talking to you.

2012 contributor: Nick Trotter

Nick Trotter's contribution to kittyBOOGER twenty-twelve is the kind of long-ass mind-spasm essay nobody's publishing. That's right, nobody--except us, because this sucker is one of a kind. 'An excerpt from: From Spaces to Dimension in Aesthetic; The Klee-Deleuze Mixtape' pushes as it pulls. Some of his points (haha) he gives to you straight away, others you have to work for. Call it a vision quest through gray space. By the end you'll be following around your finger shouting "ambulatory, generative point!" and chances are you'll mean it.

 Nick Trotter is a PhD candidate at the European Graduate School for media studies and philosophy, he also teaches sound design and audio production at Burlington College, in Burlington, Vermont.

When he is not busy doing those life-encompassing things, he reads a lot, cooks the-most-delicious-food-you've-ever-tasted, and makes some great sounds; with different people in groups called 'bands', or solo, with his multi-instrumental talents, and ever-expressive baritone singing.  Between books, and sound making + recording implements, he has few rooms in his home that spare space for human beings, luckily its almost summer and we can spend time outside.

2012 contributor: Nate Anspaugh

We've told you about our friend Nate. We've even shown you one of his lovely works, the one that hangs in Tom's studio ... don't you remember? It was inspired by one of Tom's Alphabet Poems.

"... pussy plats plastered to plastic packages/ postmodern playthings/... my god/my monkey ..."

Nate is a New Yorker, by way of Ohio. He is the nicest guy you've ever met, and he makes some great art, in many dimensions. Look at his work, buy his work, tell your friends about his work. We certainly think is it worth making a fuss about ...

So do these people: The Bushwick Dream, The Bushwick Gallery, Bushwick Daily (which we featured in our December post), and MoMA PS1.
 
In kittyBOOGER twenty-twelve you will see 6 of his masks made from scavenged ad-posters from the streets of NYC. And they look gorgeous in print, sandwiched between poetry and fiction.

2012 contributor: Jeff Ausura

Like a pair of double rainbows, Jeff's pen-and-ink sketches are both rare and the product of sun fighting shadow. When we first saw them, we were drawn to the repetition and patterns, the general sense of figuration, but now, now we just think of how, one time, we fed nutrient solution to a plastic cup full of citrine dust. Crystals were supposed to grow, and they did grow--a lame film of dust--but we expected a whole world to miraculate in our cup, and for it to be both as foreign and comforting as these sketches.

Jeff Ausura has a fondness for squirrels, so we've been told. He's a designer and a sometime-teacher. He rocks. See him rocking here with his band, Never Give a Goat the High Ground, in the Mephistopholean glow of Budweiser stadium.

... or a proof!

While we were off enjoying NYC yesterday, - yes, we had coffee with one of our contributors, Nate Anspaugh - wining and dining in Greenpoint, and catching Robert Ashley and Joan La Barbara perform new songs for 'Concrete' at Roulette in Boerum Hill, we got something in the mail!

it's midnight, but I am still excited, maybe a little nervous (in the kB kitchen)

so pleased!

I have a feeling YOU might be getting kittyBOOGER twenty-twelve soon!

2012 contributor: Stephen Langlois

kittyBOOGER twenty-twelve is happy to have two stories from Stephen Langlois, Bad Dream and Vacant Lot. You'll have to wait a couple more weeks to read them - but take it from us - Mr. Langlois is inventive, adventurous and full of imagination. In these two stories the conventional world inhabited by the characters changes in a surreal or absurd way, and this change shows how static the lives of these people are.

Stephen blogs at The 50 Movie Pack Project  and has been published many places online, including just earlier this month at Juked, at Necessary Fiction, by our friends at Smalldoggies and will be in a forthcoming print issue of Gigantic Sequins, among other things.

And when the world needs him, Stephen skis down from his Rutland, Vermont retreat to fight evil, as G.I. Joe's Snow Job.

the secret of our inspiration

When I first met Tom, he was trying to impress me, he had all those big ideas we have in our early twenties that we hardly realize or wait until our almost thirties to 'make it happen' ... he had a publishing company, and I was smitten.

Six-and-a-half-years later we are publishing! But, we had some helpful stepping stones along the way.

Tom took letterpress classes at PRATT (Seattle) and made some beautiful prints.

He made a great friend, Lisa Hasegawa, a letterpress printer, book artist and teacher. We had some fun dates with her; making books, playing with stamps, learning bindings. And through Lisa, Tom has had the privilege of being a part of her post card exchange, and my studio is filled with beautiful postcards ...

Now Tom is learning the art of Japanese woodblock printing, and made a chapbook, The Florida Room in his recent Hybrid Poetry class.

There is so much that has inspired us to make kittyBOOGER happen, and January 1st, 2011, we decided that we needed to do it. Though it has been a slow process, we are so excited for kittyBOOGER twenty-twelve to come out! And we can't wait to share it with you.

and it's off to the printers!

We are so thankful that the designing is done. kB had to learn inDesign for this project, and my, what a learning curve. Though, we think it looks beautiful!

The editing was a constant process, and we are glad that we had so many eyes to look it over (you know who you are) ... What a relief to pass kB twenty-twelve off into the hands of professionals!

We hope to have a proof next week! We'll keep you posted ...

nothing like warm weather

It has only taken 75 degrees to force me to learn InDesign and get to the layout for kB.
It is beautiful outside, from my studio I can see all the trees budding and the forsythia blooming.
Yet I am inside, typing away, pulling out my hair and watching tutorials that aren't really teaching me anything. But I will persevere.
